How to Buy Real Ruby Stones
The ruby is a beautiful stone with coloring from a light pink to dark red. These lovely stones make an excellent addition to any person’s jewellery box. They are suitable for use in just about any setting and jewelry type. However, they can be hard to find as they are the rarest of all precious stones.
However, the ruby is often copied by manufacturers in paste and glass form. It makes the ruby look easily accessible for everyone, but plenty of people also mistake the fakes for the real thing.
When shopping for a ruby, make sure you don’t fall for too good a deal. Rubies almost never go for bargain basement prices. You should also keep an eye out for stones that are ‘cultured’ or ‘created’ these are synthetic stones. In addition, a real ruby usually doesn’t’ have a closed back setting. This can indicate a paste stone or glass stone.
Real rubies over 1 carat almost always have a mixed cut. Avoid large stones that have simple cuts as these might be imitations.
The best quality rubies usually come in one of three colors: Crimson in a dark blood red, Rose Red in more translucent but equally dark red and Traffic Light in vibrant, translucent pink.
Those rubies the most often catch your eye in the stores are the ‘Wild’ rubies. These stones often come in the Traffic Light shade and are also extremely fluorescent, appearing almost violently so. The more neon your ruby, the more expensive it’s going to be.
In fact, color is so valued in rubies; a violent fluorescent shade can make up for rubies with lots of ‘inclusions’ or flaws. The best rubies will also have a kind of inner life when you look at them. They catch the light so that it almost springs forth from within the stone itself. You’ll also notice spots of purple or violet within these stones
