Topaz is a precious stone that range in color from a fiery golden orange to a deep, deep blue. Often this stone is associated with friendship and fidelity. Hopefully you will find a dealer in topaz that is a loyal to your needs. However, when shopping for this stone there are a few things to keep in mind.
The topaz as with any other precious stone can be enhanced with heat to improve its color. There are other treatments for improving color such as; dies, coating, and irradiation. Any reputable dealer will tell you when a stone has been altered to improve its look. Often topaz that has been treated it as a less valuable than similar stones of natural color. Although, it becomes more valuable than it was in its original state.
Many times dealers will enhance clear topaz by irradiation which turns the stone blue. This way you’ll get a lovely blue color without having the expense of naturally blue topaz. Deep blue topaz is quite rare in nature and therefore more expensive.
However, there are plenty of other colors to choose from. Topaz can be found in yellow, brown, green and peach. All the colors of the rainbow. In addition, a very rare and expensive color of topaz is light pink or red. You will almost never find naturally light think topaz at a bargain price.
Even though stones tend to have natural flaws topaz with no visible inclusions or flaws is typically more valuable. Make sure to take a close look at your stone and pick the one with them east laws. The stone should also reflected light evenly from its surface. There should be no scratches and if there are ask if the dealer can have them polished out. Then, you’ll have the best quality topaz for your money.
